Beschrijving lot

4to: engr. title-[4]-81 ff. (1st quire loose, 2 ff. detached, rare foxing).

Contemporary binding: sprinkled calf, boards with a light calf border and frames of blind fillets (one with fleurons in the angles) and one roll-stamp, blind stamped spine on raise bands (upper board detached, rubbed, turn ins lacking, corners strongly dulled).

First edition of the translation (1st Latin ed. : Rome, 1593) illustrated with 1 engraved title by P. Tempest after I. Fuller, and, facing the commentary, 81 plates containing 4 medallions, except pl. 57 with six, totalising 326 emblems. Ref. Praz 474.- Visser, EBL, 433.- Not in Chatelain. Provenance: Princess Nadejda Scherbatow (crowned stamp).
