16th-c. panel-stamped calf, covers with central panel signed ‘IB’ within a frame of double blind rules, spine on 4 raised bands, in slipcase (sl. loosening, rubbed, endpapers lifted and loose, head and tail def.). Good copy. Sold as a binding w.a.f.
Lyon ed. of a treatise on Roman law by the German jurist Zasius (1461-1535). In a typical Louvain Renaissance binding, probably by Jacob Bathen (his initials "I.B." in the plate). The panel represents a full-length figure of a female with her hands crossed on her breast. The pedestal on which she stands is inscribed "Fides"; she is looking up to a cross above the clouds, near which the words "Meritum Christi" are. In the background is the word "Spes" and in front of her a few lines from Psalm 70. The whole is surrounded by a line from Psalm 90 (See Goldschmidt, Gothic and Renaissance bookbindings, 179). Ref. SvGültlingen (Frellon) 82 = Baudrier V:222. - Pettegree FB 91385. - Not in Adams, STC French (BL). Prov. Name on front endpaper and flyleaf "D. de Patoul".
