Description du lot

3 parts in 1 vol., 8vo: [24]-550-[2], [8]-93, [3]-32, [62-2 bl.] pp. (browning and spotting, some foxing, strong marg. dampstaining on 1st quires, upper corners of pp. 211-214 torn, without touching the text).

Contemp. limp. vellum, flat spine (upper covers with sm. holes, lower cover with a central tear, some local stains, upper pastedown and flyleaf missing, lower pastedown and flyleaf torn).

By the demonologist Henri Boguet (1550-1619), lawyer and jurist, who ruled in Franche-Comté as grand judge of Saint-Claude, and was called "brûleur féroce" due to his hunt on witches. His works have long been used as a code of torture to persecute unfortunate people accused of witchcraft. A double legend claims that, like Nicolas Rémy, Boguet ended up at the stake and that his family bought most of the copies of his "Discours" on the sly.
Ref. Caillet I:1322. - USTC 6901408. - BnF.
Prov. "De chez Mr de Vergès cure de Moncaup [Pyrénées]" (ms. entry, 17th c.).
