Folio: [10]-226-[2 bl.] pp. (lacking engr. title and prelim. quire (?) = 2 ff. with i.a. a portrait of Berengarius; toned, occ. staining).
Cont. blind-stamped vellum, spine on 5 raised bands (sm. def. at front). Good copy.
This book contains Hondius’ 1599 series of engr. portraits together with biographies and evaluation of the life and works of some 50 important Reformers, with their portrait and bibliography. Engr. ills: 49 (of 50) engr. portraits + 1 allegorical plate by Hendrick Hondius. Names included: Hus, Savonarola, Erasmus, Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, Knox, Calvin, Marnix, Bullinger, Beza, etc. Hondius (1573-1650) was one of the Netherlands’ greatest engravers and the early development of his own style can here be seen.
