Folio: [24]-288-[44] pp. (title cut a bit short with some fraying and repaired corner with sm. loss, some local dampstaining, 3 sm. Spanish notes in blank margin).
Contemp. overl. limp vellum (sl. wrinkled), flat spine titled in ink, traces of ties. Good copy.
First and only edition of this important Bruges Renaissance publication, dedicated to the Senate of Rome, by the humanist scholar, painter, engraver, numismatist, historian, antiquities dealer and printer Hubertus Goltzius (1526-1583). It consists of a chronological survey of Rome from the beginnings to the death of Augustus and is ill. with splendid engr. reproductions of antique coins and medals, including 72 woodcuts with epigraphic texts. Allegorical engraved title figuring Rome dominating the enslaved people. Engr. mark on last page. A few nice woodcut initials.
