Engr., 2 sheets, 65 x 80 cm, hand-coloured (small margins).

Mounted on cloth.

Rare map of the Seventeen Provinces published in the 1785 and 1786 editions of "Les délices des Pays-Bas" for a surcharge of half a Crown, according the publisher. Given that the map originated as a loose leaf map, and given as well the addition on the cartouche that it was designed according the latest observations, and more particularly according the latest peace treaties, it represents the war-situation at that time. As a matter of fact, the map was published shortly after the so-called Kettle War in 1784 and the subsequent Treaty of Fontainebleau signed on November 8, 1785 between Joseph II, ruler of the Habsburg Monarchy, and the States-General of the United Provinces. Based on the terms of the accord, the United Provinces were permitted to maintain sovereignty over the Scheldt Estuary in return for several concessions to the Habsburgs including the breaking up of some military fortifications.
