19th-c. half calf with corners, flat spine, black title label (sl. rubbed, minor lacks of leather on upper turn-in and corners, sm. wormholes on joints).
First and only edition, with manuscript dedication of the author, of this study on fire-resistant structures, dedicated to M. de la Porte, royal counsellor, "maître des requêtes" and "intendant de justice, police & finances" for Lorraine and Barrois. Born in Lunéville, Piroux (1749-1805) was an architect and lawyer in Nancy. He won a prize given by the Royal Academy for the discovery of means of preventing fires and fire propagation. Ill. (complete) with 4 technical engravings, woodcut armorial dedication head-piece. Chapters on the nature of fire, causes of fires, stoves and chimneys, potential hazards presented by floors, walls and staircases, fire-proof floors, etc. Complete with errata-leaf.
