First ed. of the translation by the Oxford academic Pierre-François Le Courayer of the work of the Venetian humanist, scientist and historian Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623). Sarpi's work did not coincidentally appear first in London in 1619, since the author took a critical attitude towards Rome and the centralising impulses from the papal capital. Ill. with a full-page portrait of the author and some headpieces, all by Georges Vertue.
