8 vols., 12mo: [6]-xxii-[2]-459-[35], [4]-398-[33], [4]-403-[29], [6]-415-[23], [4]-401-[11], [4]-388-[10], [4]-399-[13], [8]-409-[14] pp.; 5 pls. (some prel. lvs lacking in vol. 1 & 2 ?).

Cont. calf, gilt tooled spine with raised bands (some lacking of labels on spines, spines sl. faded, some boards sl. rubbed).

First edition. After 10 years of extensive missionary work in the French West Indies, Labat (1663-1738), a Dominican preacher, moved back to Europe in 1705, spending some time in Spain and Rome to write an account of his mission. From 1709 to 1716, he then stayed in Civita-Vecchia. The work relates his journeys, ill. with 5 maps and views (complete copy) engr. by Humblot showing the plan of a Turkish bath, the papal tomb, a statue of saint Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Dominican order, the harbour of Anzio and the plan of Civita-Vecchia. The 1st vol. treats the Philippines; the others his impressions of Italy: monuments, pictures, libraries, cabinets of curiosities, etc. Ref. Brunet III:707. - Not in Chadenat. Prov.
