A man with a wide-rimmed hat carrying a basket and a bag over his right shoulder. At the age of 22 Madou (1796-1877) became a honorary member of the Belgian Société des Beaux Arts. He specialised in genre painting, echoing the Flemish and Dutch traditions established by Adriaen Brouwer and Jan Steen.
