Beschrijving lot

3 parts, in 1 vol. 4to (text n.c.; dampstaining, browning and mouldy spots).

Nice contemp. binding by Jacob C. Schoots van Capelle (Amsterdam): marbled calf, covers with double black border richly decorated with a large variety of gilt flower tools, large central gilt ornament, spine with 5 black raised bands, compartments richly gilt with vegetal tools, title "Biblia" gilt-lettered, gilt-orn. sides, marbled edges with fine gilt gauffering at top and bottom edge (binding sl. rubbed, corners bumped, joints split, sm. def. at head & tail, gauffering sl. faded, front endpaper loosening).

States Bible containing the set of 4to Bible prints by Matthias Scheits ("Scheitsprenten") with English caption at top and French and Dutch caption at bottom: 68 for the New Testament (complete) and 75 (of 82) for the Old Testament. They are engr. by pupils of R. de Hooghe (i.a. Lamsvelt & Doesburgh, ca. 20 x 17 cm), copied after the sl. larger plates (ca. 24 x 19) engr. by better known Dutch and German artists (i.a. Bloteling & de Visscher) after the orig. drawings by M. Scheits. Also containing 19 engr. folding plates, of which 5 maps (Paradise & Canaan; World map; Promised Land; Jerusalem; Holy Land) and 14 Bible plates, mostly only with French captions. All together, our Bible contains 162 engraved plates, plus an engr. title page. "J.C. Schoots van Capelle [fl. 1745-ca. 1780] was one of the most important Amsterdam binders of the eighteenth century, not so much on account of the quantity of the known work [...] but of the high quality and the exceptional materials used [...]." (Storm van Leeuwen, I, p. 521).
