Contemp. limp vellum, green tinted spine gilt ruled and orn. (sl. soiled, inner joint sl. loose with paper reinforcement on endpaper).
First edition of a devotional novel intended to prepare the Christian for a good death, by the French writer Jean Puget de La Serre (1600-1665), "historiographe de France" who followed Marie de Médicis in exile from 1627-1639 in Brussels, until her death. Nice macabre and funeral ill. by C. Galle after N. Vander Horst, pupil of Rubens: 1 front., 1 portr. of the dedicatory, Marquis de Saint-Rémy, 4 emblematic figures (3 full-pages). Engr. macabre title-vignette. Without the author's portrait, often missing.
