8vo: front.-[16]-272 pp. (tear restored without loss on front., 1 full-page engr. cut and mounted on f. M7, f. a5 nearly disbound, remains of a label at the bottom of the front.).

Contemp. limp vellum, green tinted spine gilt ruled and orn. (sl. soiled, inner joint sl. loose with paper reinforcement on endpaper).

First edition of a devotional novel intended to prepare the Christian for a good death, by the French writer Jean Puget de La Serre (1600-1665), "historiographe de France" who followed Marie de Médicis in exile from 1627-1639 in Brussels, until her death. Nice macabre and funeral ill. by C. Galle after N. Vander Horst, pupil of Rubens: 1 front., 1 portr. of the dedicatory, Marquis de Saint-Rémy, 4 emblematic figures (3 full-pages). Engr. macabre title-vignette. Without the author's portrait, often missing.
