Beschrijving lot

4to: front.-viii-xiv-474-[1] pp. (foxing).

Contemp. green mottled calf, gilt-ruled covers, gilt-lettered prize on red morocco mounted on front cover, gilt-orn. flat spine with red morocco labels, marbled edges (rubbed, front joint partly split).

Work on celestial mechanics and solar system (1st: 1796) by the Marquis de Laplace (1749-1827), French astronomer. Illustrated with his medallion portrait in frontispiece.
Prov. Prize awarded to François Hippolyte Désiré Mention (1825-1897) in 1845 as "Major of Promotion" of Polytechnics. The prize was founded by the wife of Marquis de Laplace (gilt supralibros). Mention (1825-1897) was an engineer, Professor of the lecture on "Chemins de fer" at the "École Centrale Paris" and Director of the "Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans" (signature).
