First French edition translated from the Italian by Jean-Baptiste Labat (1st Italian ed.: 1672) of the work mainly composed of the letters of Guattini to his father and published by Carli. The Capuchins Guattini (1637-1668) and Carli embarked from Genoa in 1667 for a mission to the Kingdom of Kongo, but 3 months after their arrival in the region of Mbamba, Guattini died. Carli, gravely ill, succeeded in reaching Bologna in 1671 and published the letters of his companion in 1672. It contains a very detailed account of their travels, their stops in Lisboa and Bahia, tempests, corsair attacks, etc. The book is also very interesting because it includes the second known account of Recife (Brazil) after the expulsion of the Dutch.
