The Roman Rota (in Latin Tribunal Apostolicum Rotae Romanae) is the highest appellate tribunal of the Catholic Church, mainly in charge with petitions seeking the issuance of a decree of nullity of a marriage. Our document concerns the case between Christianus de Doncker, from the diocese of Tournai, and Barbara Boudins, from the diocese of Cambrai, and mentioned an "adulterio notario".
Antonio Grassi (d. 1491), member of a wealthy family from Bologna, was appointed auditor of the Rota in 1462 by Pope Pius II. He served as Sixtus IV's nuncio to Emperor Frederick III during 1478-79. In 1485, Pope Innocent VIII appointed him bishop of Tivoli and elected him later Cardinal.
