First French translation of "Reyno jesuitico del Paraguay" (1770), extracted from "Coleccion general de documentos, tocante á la tercera época de las conmociones de los regulares de la Compañia en el Paraguay". Ibáñez de Echávarry (1715-1762) entered the Jesuits in 1733 but was expelled in 1745 because of his extravagant spirit. After that he was readmitted and settled in Buenos Aires. When the Order wanted to send him elsewhere, he refused and was again expelled. He then wrote some books undoubtedly with the aim to discredit the good reputation of the Society of Jesus. The purpose of this one is to be a continuation of Raynal's "Histoire philosophique et politique des deux Indes" and contains chapters on "the Jesuit kingdom", and on what needs to be done so that the Indians "return" wealth to Spain. The large folding map shows the lower part of South America (Chili, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, south of Brazil).
Ref. Barbier II:785. - Sabin 21763.
Prov. Braamcamp de Barahona Fragoso (modern bookpl.).
