8vo: xxiv-484 pp.

Contemp. tree calf, covers with gilt ornamental border, richly gilt flat spine with morocco label, marbled endpapers (sl. rubbed, front joint starting to split). Good copy.

J. Cookson (1752-1835) was a divine educated at Oxford. This was his first published work, supporting the writings of Martin Madan (1726-1790), the author of "Thelyphthora", and a vigorous advocate of obligatory polygamy as being in accord with Mosaic law and Christian principles. Madan's exceedingly detailed analyses of the Bible and history and his lurid descriptions of the suffering of women under monogamy provoked charges of blasphemy.
Ref. ESTC T109292.
Prov. A few contemp. marginal notes.
