Woodcut, 29,2 x 25,6 cm, modern vellum paper, unsigned (paper sl. toned, trimmed to borderline).
Under passe-partout.
This is the most important woodcut by Wolf Traut (1480-1520), a pupil and close collaborator of Dürer. The characteristic white line used to emphasise the edges of some of his forms are similar to Dürer's early woodcuts and the general composition and architectural setting is a more centralised variation of the same scene in Dürer's series of the Life of the Virgin. The print shows that Traut was able to create attractive, if derivative, compositions. Second, and final state, without the monogram and date in the lower left corner.
