Beschrijving lot
Engraving, 9,4 x 6,3 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate with monogram "GP" (trimmed to the borderline, some foxing, repaired tear at upper left, sm. defect to paper left of Dido's right leg).
Stuck by upper corners under passe-partout.
Dramatic depiction of Dido's suicide, after being abandoned by Aeneas. The pose is inspired by Marcantonio Raimondi's Lucretia and Dido engravings. The attribution to Pencz was doubted by David Landau in his catalogue on the artist in 1978.
