LA FARGUE, Paulus Constantin

Gentleman in palace gardens.

Ca. 1760

Drawing, pen and black/grey ink, with grey wash, 12 x 19 cm, paper, signed with pen and black ink at lower right corner "P.C. la Fargue del.". With illegible date (trimmed to framing lines, some brown stains).

Mounted on passe-partout.

Known as one of the most skilled painters of the Dutch rococo and classicist landscape, La Fargue (1729-1782) was in high demand with the Dutch urban aristocracy in The Hague. He was strongly influenced by Ruisdael, whose works he occasionally copied. This stylised drawing is typical for La Fargue's youthful topographical drawings.
