Circle of STOOP, Dirck

Horse with a shoeing-smith.

Ca. 1640-1680

Drawing, red chalk, 13,2 x 18,7 cm, light brown laid paper, no watermark, unsigned (some old straightened creases).

Stuck under passe-partout.

Interesting drawing depicting a horse facing left, having its horseshoes replaced by two men wearing hats. The two male figures were possibly added at a later date and by a different hand, as the chalk lines are more prominent and the rendering is less fluent. The horse recalls similar compositions by Dirck Stoop (1615-1686), who was widely known for his depictions of horses and hunting parties. A signed drawing in black chalk sold at the Old Master's drawings auction at Sotheby's in November 2006 (lot 80) shows a horse facing left which can be compared to our drawing in its rendering and parallel hatching. It is also similar in spirit to Stoop's equine subjects in his print series (see Hollstein vol. XXVIII, nos. 1-12).
