Beautiful view of the town of Workum (Friesland) seen from the waterside. Rising at the horizon is the St Gertrudis church which was never completed after construction stopped in 1523. This atmospheric sheet is both in style and subject close to the pre-romantic townscapes in wash by Aert Schouman (1710-1792). The animated town view also approaches the drawings by Arnout ter Himpel (1634-1661), which possibly bears some relationship to the unidentified initials at the lower margin of the drawing.
