First Latin ed. by Jacques Dalechamps (1513-1588), physician and botanist, of Athenaeus' Deipnosophistae (i.e. Sophists at Dinner or The Banquet of the Learned), account by Athenaeus to his friend Timocrates of banquets held at the house of Larensius, scholar and wealthy patron of the arts. This work contains information on gastronomy, wine, food, but also on music, dance, philology, etc., and is also important because in the course of the discussions, participants quote authors or writings which are not otherwise recorded.
