Bound by Lortic: red morocco, covers bordered with three gilt fillets, spine on raised bands richly gilt decorated and with small black leather inserts in the center, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt inside dentelles, gilt edges (edges and corners bumped).

Second edition of the translation by François d'Assy, secretary to Henri II and to Duchess Louise of Valentinois, daughter of Cesare Borgia (1st ed. of the transl. : Paris 1527). Italian novel, first published in Parma in 1508, narrating the unfortunate love between Peregrino and Ginevra, both from enemy Ferrarese families. Peregrino travelled to the East, in India, Cyprus and Creta a.o. before he could find his beloved, closed in a Ravenna monastery. Their reunion didn't last long as they both died. Title printed in black and red in a richly ornamented border by Guillaume II Leroy and with the mark of Cl. Nourry in the center (heart in red ink). Text in gothic type decorated with 3 woodcuts (presentation of the book to the King, Peregrino leaving for St Catherine's Monastery of Sinai and his arrival in Cyprus) and with historiated initials by Leroy. This work is singular in the production of Caviceo (1443-1511), more used to humanistic writings in Latin. Neat typography of this novel in a nice red morocco binding. Ref.
