Description du lot
Folio: [6] pp.; 63 maps on 75 sheets, most with hand-coloured borders (edges of text ff. sl. soiled, some outer edges of maps sl. soiled, very few spots).
Contemp. quarter calf, marbled paper boards, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands (restored binding: rebacked with original spine pasted on, boards restored).
Later ed. (1st 1762), complete with an engr. title by Prevost after Monnet and all the maps according to the "Table", i.e. a pl. with "Globes et sphères", one with "Sphère armillaire", a world map, 4 continent maps (Europe, Asia, Africa and America), 32 maps (on 38 sheets) relating to Europe (of which 14 on France), 7 (on 11 sheets) to Asia, 5 (on 6 sheets) to Africa, 9 (on 9 sheets) to America and 3 (on 4 sheets) to the Holy Land. Conceived as a map guide to Nicole de la Croix's "Geographie moderne" in a convenient format to meet the demands of the public or as the author puts it: "Depuis longtems on se plaint de la forme des atlas. Les uns, par leur poids énorme [...]; les autres, sont à la vérité d'un format plus commode, mais ils reserrent les objets dans des bornes trop étroites, et rebutent, par la finesse excessive des caractères." Most maps dated between 1762 and 1783. Enriched with the map "Carte de la Gaule pour servir à la lecture de l'histoire ancienne".
