2 vol., oblong folio: [6]-lxxiv-[2] pp.; 5 maps, [4] pp.; 87 pl. (some foxing sl. touching some pl., very marg. waterstaining with light damage on last pl., marg. tear over c. 1 to 5 cm without loss at the bottom of a number of plates with no damage to the image except on pl. XXXIX and XL).
Contemp. quarter green shagreen, green cloth on boards, gilt-ruled spines with raised bands (rubbed, some scratches on leather, plates vol.: partly disbound, tears on endcaps and joints, one endpaper loose and damaged).
Remarkable work nicely illustrated (complete) with 87 pl. showing English, Dutch & Danish, Swiss and German, Austrian and French cattle. The plates are based on photographs by Nadar jeune (alias Adrien Tournachon, half brother of Félix Nadar), interpreted in pencil by animal artists or sculptors such as Rosa or Isidore Bonheur, Émile Van Marcke, Barye, Troyon, etc. and then reproduced with several engraving techniques such as photo engraving by A. Riffaut, Ch. Nègre, etc. Text volume complete with 5 coloured maps.
