Second part, complete in itself, of the first Dutch translation of "A new voyage around the world" (orig. 1697-1703), the travel account of the first (of three) voyages around the world by the English navigator W. Dampier (1652-1715), spanning the years 1679-1691. Engr. ill.: frontispiece by Jan Lamsvelt, 5 maps (all but 1 folding) of the Strait of Malacca, the Bay of Campeche, the trade winds in the Pacific, those in the Atlantic and the Indian, and Darien with the Gulf of Panama, and 10 full-page plates (of which 2 folding) showing tortures, ceremonies, alligator hunt, catching of oxes, natives smoking, warriors in battle dress. This 2nd part also contains the first Dutch translation of "A new voyage and description of the isthmus of America" (orig. 1699) by the Welsh explorer and buccaneer L. Wafer (1640-1705), with separate pagination and title page. "Dampier is one of the most famous British sailors. A combination pirate, adventurer and explorer, he possessed besides his excellent qualities as a navigator, a good general culture and a veritable gift for observation [...] He wrote very well, with facility and clarity, rendering the reading of his relations very agreeable" (Borba de Moraes).
