Contemp. mottled sheep, gilt orn. spines with 5 raised bands, red edges (covers somewhat rubbed, lower cover 1st vol. def., joints sl. rubbed). Nice copy.
First edition by the ecclesiastic and oculist Desmonceaux (1734?-1806). Ill. with an engr. author's portrait by Nicollet after Le Sueur showing the author in his library, raising his eyes to the sky in an attitude of ecstasy and holding between two fingers an eyeball, and 3 engr. anatomical plates. In the first vol. the author deals with the sight of infants, adults and the elderly; the effects of electricity on the organs of sight; and artificial eyes. In vol. 2 he deals with the diseases of the poor; tears; and ways to preserve sight. At the end of vol. 2 there is a treatise on hearing and the ears.
