5 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [8]-35-[1 bl.], 315-[1 bl.], 91-[1 bl.], 46-[2 bl.], 48-[6]-49/51[-1 bl.] pp. (ff. g2-3 of last part missing, some worming in upper margin of last quires, blank corner of f. Q4 torn off).
Contemp. overl. vellum, flat spine titled in ink. Good copy.
First edition of a reworked version of "Silenus Alcibiadis sive Proteus" (1st Middelburg 1618), one of the major Dutch emblem books, and also Cats’ first emblem book. Ill. with nice engr. title, 52 circular emblems with texts in Dutch, Latin and French in the 2nd part "Sinne ende minnebeelden", 44 circular emblems in the 3rd part "Emblemata moralia et aeconomica" with texts in Dutch and Latin, 1 nice engr. medallion portrait of Galatea and 5 engr. in-text in the 5th part "Galathee ofte Harder minne-klachte" and 1 engr. medallion portrait of Phyllis bound at the end (but belonging to the 4th part, "Argumentum").
