Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [8]-427[-1 bl.]-[19-1 bl.], 187[- 1 bl.] pp. (cut a bit short at top, title with old fold causing sm. hole and strengthened at margins, min. worming in blank margin first 75 ff. and last few ff., light marg. stain quires x-Hh, some min. soiling).

19th-c. quarter calf, marbl. paper on covers, gilt flat spine, brown leather title label, blue sp. edges (sl. rubbed, a few sm. def. on covers and head). Good copy.

First edition of this splendid collection edited by the Frankfurt publisher Feyerabend (1528-1590) of the leading histories of the Low Countries: Jacobus Meyerus (Pt I, Flanders), H. Barlandus (II, Brabant), G. Geldenhouwer (II, Holland), Jac. Marchantius (II, Flanders), L. Guicciardini (II, in Latin) and shorter texts by Ph. Galle and G. Candidus on the actual situation. Titles within elaborate allegorical woodcut border signed I A (Jost Amman). Woodcut head pieces, initials and Feyerabend publisher's mark signed T S (Tobias Stimmer) at end part I. Ref. VD-16 F-897. - Adams B-470bis. - Machiels F-91. - STC German (BL) 301. Prov. "Jacobi du [?], religiosus Sancti Amandi" (ownership entry on verso title). - Bookpl. with device "In pietate et studio Pax Mentis" on front endpaper. - "Conventus Reckhemiensis" (stamp on title). - Some ink notes in beginning of part I, ms. ballpoint date on title.
