Lot description

6 vol., folio.

Half green leather (sl. rubbed), gilt titled and numbered spines on 4 raised bands (sl. rubbed esp. at head & tail, some scratches). Vol. 59: some min. foxing on 1st & last lvs, vol. 60: without gen. title and index, vol. 61: some minor marg. foxing, vol. 62: 1 double pl. dam. near c'fold, (some ills clumsily col., some ills cut out, some pages torn out leaving however still hundreds of nice ills of which quite a lot double-paged). With a lot of additional ills outer c. Except for the cut out ills, inside in very good condition.

Vol. 59 (July-Dec. 1871) to 64 (January-June 1874), most vol. with general title page (clumsily col.), index and list to illustrations. 4 years of this famous illustrated newspaper, that appeared first on Saturday 14 May 1842, as the world's first illustrated weekly news magazine, marking a revolution in journalism and news reporting. The publication presented a vivid picture of British and world events, including news of war, disaster, ceremonies, the arts, and science. Founded by Herbert Ingram (1811-1860), it appeared weekly until 1971, then less frequently thereafter, and ceased publication in 2003.
