Contemp. calf, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands (covers scratched, corners rubbed and bumped, joints split, def. partly and visibly restored).
First edition of the important work on Japan by the Dutch theologian and historian A. Montanus (1625-1683) based upon eyewitness accounts from the two missions dispatched there in 1649 and 1661 by the Dutch East India Company. Ill. with 25 double or fold. pl. of which one map and numerous in-text figures showing plans and views, temples, costumes, ceremonies, etc. Beautiful early views of i.a. Edo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kagoshima, Deshima, Batavia, volcano eruptions, etc. Title in red & black. Printed in 2 col.
