Lot description
19 x 45 cm with plica, on vellum, ruled text in brown ink, fragments of 2 pending brown wax seals, contemp. ms. annot. on verso. Good condition.
Two prominent clergymen of Koblenz, Henricus, dean of the chapter of St Castor, and G[er]lacus, dean of St Florin, confirm to have taken good note of the charter of Frederick II in favour of the "Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's hospital in Jerusalem" which guarantees their privileges and properties. Following the "incipit", our document offers the complete transcription of the original "bulla" of 1221 as given in Taranto by Emperor Frederick II (1194-1250), including the names of the witnesses being heads of prestigious German noble houses. Amongst them, Herman von Salza (1165-1239), 4th Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order.
In 1216, the Archbishop of Koblenz granted grounds of the chapter of St Castor together with the St Nicolas Hospital of the Florinsstifte, both situated on the "Deutsches Eck", the confluence of the Rhine with the Moselle, to the Teutonic Order. This document illustrates the expansion and influence of this chivalric order in the 13th century. With the monogram of Frederick II and large fragments of the wax seals of both chapters.
