Lot description

8vo: [6]-vi-96 pp.

Contemp. half calf, marbled paper on covers, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (later corners, joints splitting, def. to head and tail).

Later French edition of "Libellus quo demonstratur cicutam non solum usu interno [...]" (1st 1760) translated by Heinrich Joseph Collin on the usage of conium maculatum, colloquially known as (poison or wild) hemlock by the Austrian physician von Störck (1731-1803), becoming the personal physician of empress Maria Theresia of Austria after curing her from smallpox. Ill. with a front. portrait by Mansfeldt. Hemlock is a highly poisonous plant and was used in Ancient Greece to poison condemned prisoners. Socrates is the most famous victim of hemlock poisoning. Störck here proves that hemlock is safe for internal use and a very useful medicine in many diseases which up to that time were declared as impossible to cure.
