Lot description

Drawing, pen, black ink, 11,5 x 19,3 cm, laid paper without watermark, unsigned (sm. pin holes and very light stain).

Dedication plate to King William I of the Netherlands who is portrayed between two allegorical figures and putti. A trumpet banner bears the motto "Eendragt maakt magt", originally used by the Dutch Republic, but re-introduced from 1802 to 1810 and still in use when William I ascended the throne in 1815. It switched to the House of Orange motto "Je maintiendrai" in 1816. The drawing has been attributed to J. Paelinck, although his state portrait of William I, preserved in the Rijksmuseum, is from a later date.
