Lot description
12mo: [2]-67-[1] pp. (toned).
Mod. brown calf signed Dubois d'Enghien-Dooms, covers with gilt coat of arms, flat spine, gilt orn. edges, gilt inside dentelles, spr. edges. In splicase. Very nice copy.
Very rare first Latin edition (orig. 1578) of this early work on the sources of Spa and Tongeren, by the physician Ph. Gherincx, translated by Th. de Rye, physician to the prince-bishop Ernest of Bavaria. He writes on the nature of the sources and which healing powers they have on which afflictions. In the 15 pp. Tongeren part, he aims to prove that Plinius' famous sentence "Tungri civitas Galliae fontem habet insignem" is about the mineral spring of Tongeren, and not that of Spa or Aachen, as other authors (a.o. Limbourg) have suggested. Large woodcut arms of Ernest of Bavaria on last f.
