Contemp. three-quarter black straight grained morocco, blue paper on covers, gilt orn. flat spines (rubbed). Good, uncut copy.
First edition of the French translation of "A voyage to the Cape of Good Hope" (1785) by the Swedish naturalist Anders Sparrman (1748-1820) who was assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. Illustrated with a frontispiece showing the environment of the Cape of Good Hope, a large fold. map of the Cape, "Contenant les noms et la position des lieux habités tant par les colons Hollandais que par les Hottentots", and 15 plates (of which. 2 fold.) showing local artifacts and fauna. With at the end of vol. II, vocabularies of Hottentot and Kaffir languages.
