Lot description

In-folio: 81-[52, incl. 20 bl.] pp. (some spotting and ink offsetting).

Contemp. half brown sheep, marbled paper on covers, hand-coloured coat of arms on front cover, flat spine (with defects).

Very nice hand-coloured armorial, justified with diverse charters and old manuscripts or printed documents, of the family Le Mire, an old noble family from the Cambraisis region whose origins lie in the house of Quievy. The book opens with the biography of Robert de Quievy, nicknamed "Le Mire", documented in 1096. The family had to move to Brussels during the 16th c. due to the conflict between Charles V and Francis I. One of the most famous representatives of this lineage is certainly the ecclesiastical historian Aubertus Miraeus (1573-1640), almoner and librarian to Archduke Albert of Austria. The last entry is dedicated to Marie Thérèse Le Mire (d. 1777), spouse of Jacques de Thysebaert. Contains also an armorial of the family van den Eede, linked to the Le Mires. Enriched with 3 engr. portraits of Joannes Miraeus (1560–1611), 4th Bishop of Antwerp, Aubertus Miraeus, his nephew, and Aubertus van den Eede (1603-1678), 8th Bishop of Antwerp, and loose genealogical documents.
Joined: Sleeve containing 2 deeds in vellum with seals in an iron box, 17th or 18th-c. copies (or fakes?) of 13th and 14th-c. deeds regarding Le Mire's family. (3 pcs)
