Lot description

2 vol. 12-mo: [24]-334, [4]-335/1022 pp. (sm. stains and sl. browning throughout, large ink stains at bottom of first few lvs, more marginal on other lvs, text still legible).

Contemp. calf, gilt double fillet frame on the covers, gilt-ruled spines with raised bands, red edges (us., some old restorations).

Contemporary copy of a first-hand Catholic account of the revolt of the Camisards (1702-1710), also called "Fanatiques" at the time. The word "Camisard" was used by French Catholics to denote Huguenots in the south-central Cévennes region. La Baume (1644-1715) was adviser to the presidial of Nîmes and one of the founders of the academy of Nîmes (1682). He wrote a lot of history, but nothing was published during his lifetime. His account only circulated in manuscript form in the 18th century and was first published in 1874 as the "Relation historique de la révolte des Camisards". "La Baume porte sur la guerre des Camisards un regard à la fois juste et original, et en plusieurs endroits irremplaçable, à côté de ceux de L'Ouvreleul, plus complet, et de Court, plus soucieux de vérité" (P. Cabanel). His work is divided into three books and offers detailed accounts of the violence in Nîmes and the surrounding areas. Our copy contains the books 1 and 2, covering the period from 1702 until 1704. On the titles, under the mention of the part, another contemporary hand has added: "où l'on voit ce qui s'est passé sous le comte de Broglie" (pt. I), "où l'on voit ce qui s'est passé sous le maréchal de Monrevel" (pt. II).
Ref. Cabanel, P., "Présentation", in La Baume, Ch.-J. de - Relation historique de la révolte des Fanatiques ou des Camisards. Montpellier, 2004. - Notice of the copy of the University of Pennsylvania (Ms. Codex 1184, online: openn.library.upenn.edu). - CCFr (two 18th-c. ms. copies: Bib. Mazarine in Paris and Carré d'art in Nîmes).
Prov. St Blanquat (ms. mention). - Tahan (?) (id., partly deleted).
