Lot description

3 parts in 1 vol., 12mo: [8, engr. title incl.]-184, 50, [8]-84 pp. Good inside condition.

19th-c. three-quarter black calf, marbled paper covers, spine with raised bands, red spr. edges (rubbed, front joint split).

First combined edition of 3 rare works on human reproduction ill. with an engr. title. Plazzoni' s work describes the organs of human reproduction. Followed by Aranzi's work on foetus, the only ed. publ. in the 17th c. The Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the University of Bologna (1529/1530-1589) discovered among many other things that the blood of mother and foetus remains separate during pregnancy. The Nymann work marks the transition from theological to scientific embryology in the 17th c. and is continuously paginated with Adrian Spigel's "Epistola de incerto tempore partus" (pp. 61-84). Spigel was the first to observe milk in female breasts at birth.
