2 vol., large 4to (foxing).

Contemp. half red shagreen by Ch. Magnier, blind ruled red cloth covers, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, a.e.g. (rubbed, staining, front cover of vol. I dusty).

First edition of this work giving an overview of the life in Japan in the Edo period. Abundantly illustrated with ill. in text and full-page and with 6 maps (2 fold.). A. Humbert (1819-1900) was a Swiss politician, traveller and educator. In 1856, he was named President of the Swiss Council of States. He was sent by the Swiss Federal governement as envoy plenipotentiary to Japan in 1863-1864 with the goal of concluding a trade treaty and amity with the shogunate.
