Contemp. quarter calf, marbled paper on covers, gilt and blindst. flat spine, marbled edges, marbled endpapers.
First edition by the French geologist and traveller Faujas de Saint-Fond (1742-1819), friend of Buffon and first professor of geology at the Jardin des Plantes. Ill. with 3 engr. pl. by Sellier. Faujas was the first to conclusively prove the volcanic origin of basalt. Here he describes and classifies a great variety of basalts and identifies the sources of each, often locations where he personally gathered samples. In fine a catalogue of the volcanic specimens gathered at Mount Etna by Dolomieu.
