Lot description

2 parts in one vol., 4to : [24]-280 pp. (frontisp. with sm.  tears and def. underlaid, sm. tears *4 repaired, some sl. spotting and staining throughout, sm. tear in 3 engr. mended).

Cont. calf, gilt ruled double border on covers, gilt ruled spine on 4 raised bands (sm. def. at head and tail, cracks in spine), red speckled edges. Good copy.

First rare edition of Kerckring's important anatomical atlas of clinical observations, medical cursiosities, autopsy discoveries along with general anatomical information on foetal bones. Illustrated with a frontisp. showing a suspended male cadaver being dissected by a woman in classical dress, and title vign. both by Blotelingh and 39 numb. engravings incl. 9 folding pl. and 30 ills in text. Th. Kerckring (1638-1693), Dutch anatomist and chemical physician, was the first to describe the large ossicle sometimes present at the lambdioal suture. He gave his name also to the "valvulae conniventes" a part of the small intestine. Furthermore he stated correctly that the skeleton develops from membrane, into cartilage into bone. Ref.
