Lot description

12mo: [24 incl. front.]-298-[14] pp. (verso of pl. sl. offsetting, small marg. lack of paper to f. *10).

19th-c. red morocco (tiny scratch on upper cover), double blind rule on covers, blind-ruled spine on 5 raised bands (locally sl. rubbed), gilt inner dentelle, gilt-ruled sides, marbled and gilt edges. Good copy.

Abridged edition of a successful treatise on mythology (1st ed. 1659) by the French Jesuit humanist Pomey (1618-1673). 1st and very clear impression of the beautiful engraved illustration by Jan Van Viaenen (1660 ?-1726 ?): title after Goeree (dated 1698) and 27 plates representing gods and goddesses of the Roman Pantheon such as Jupiter, Apollo, Mercury, Mars, Juno, Minerva, Venus, Aurora, Janus, Vesta, Ceres, Pan etc. Good unsigned binding.
