Lot description
Elephant folio: 20 pl. (spotted, dampst., some wormtracks and tears, not all plates evenly affected).
Contemp. quarter calf, paper on covers (corners, sides, covers rubbed and def.).
First edition and rare work by the French medical doctor Jean-Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) and the French painter and lithographer Nicolas-Henri Jacob (1782-1871) consisting of a series of 20 very large anatomical lithographed plates. These plates were intended to be mounted on the walls of dissection rooms and had a pedagogical purpose which explains the often very poor state of the illustrations. The plates, originally sold separately, reproduce the illustrations in Bourgery and Jacob’s "Traité complet d’anatomie" at a much larger scale and deals with osteology and syndesmology, myology and aponeurology, angiology, neurology, the digestive system and the reproductive organs. Our copy without the accompanying booklet.
