4 vol., 8vo: [16]-460-[20], [4]-462-[14], [2]-482-[12], [8]-446-[6] pp. (1st title underlined with red pencil, marg. dampstaining, occ. spotting, pl. 30 misplaced p. 335 instead of 135 in vol. II).
Contemp. mottled calf, gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, red sp. edges (some def. on endcaps, some rubbing). Good copy with large margins.
Later edition (1st 1694), ill. with 136 engr. pl. (32, 56 incl. n. 17bis, 31 incl. n. 7bis, 17; of which some folding). The work deals with problems in arithmetic, gnomonics, cosmography, mechanics, pyrotechnics, geometry, optics, acoustics and physics. It contains the treatise on clocks by the Italian Dominique Martinelli de Spolete (1st Venice1663), further observations on water clocks, natural phosphors, perpetual lamps, etc., and even some magic tricks ("tours de gibecière"). J. Ozanam (1640-1717) was a member of the Academy of Science and author of numerous works on mathematics, geometry and trigonometry.
