4 pt. in 3 vol., 4to: [32]-532-[32], [16]-578-[50], [10]-304-[22], [14]-226-[9] pp.; 27 (of 28) pl.; 1 tabl. (sl. spotting and foxing, occ. extensive, some marg. damp stains in all vol., one larger at end of vol. II, some holes in text, 1st f. of quire õ in vol. I misplaced, soiling in quire G of vol. III).
Contemp. mottled calf, gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, spr. edges (very rubbed, front joints of vol. I and III part. split, heads and tails missing).
First French edition by Nicolas Perrot d'Ablancourt, published posthumously, of this historical work on Africa (1st in Spanish 1573-1599). Contains descriptions of Ethiopia, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Portuguese possessions on the East Coast of Africa, gold mines of Sofal, etc. With 27 maps on double page by Nicolas Sanson ("Arabie, Petrée, Déserte, et Heureuse", "L'Empire du Sophy des Perses", "Sorie et Diarbeck", Hungary, Italy, Kingdom of Congo, Upper Ethiopia, "Zanguébar", Morocco, India, Cabo Verde, etc.). Third vol. includes the "Histoire des Chérifs" by Diego Torres in a translation of Pierre Richelet (without the 2 portraits in front.). Luis del Marmol (1520?-1600) lived for many years in the Moorish Granada kingdom and in the North African Berber regions.
