Lot description
Large folio: front.-[10]-189-[13] pp.; 38 pl. (sl. marg. soiling, some water or damp stains, many reinforcements of paper on ff. and pl., 4 plates mounted on paper (pp. 5, 9, 43, 146), tears on several plates, mostly repaired except i.a. a 13 cm tear on pl. 22, another with min. loss, pl. 16 completed on the left side with pen and brown ink, at the time, also on frames of pl. 25 and 29).
Contemp. speckled calf, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (rubbed, some scratches, sm. missing of leather on joint and spine, corners bumped).
Spectacular publication on the Entry into Antwerp of the Spanish Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand (1609-1641) in 1635. The production was delayed on account of financial problems, the untimately death of a major collaborator (Rubens, May 1640), and almost halted by the death of Ferdinand himself (November 1641). Complete with 43 numb. engr. on 39 full- or double-page or folding plates by Th. van Thulden after Rubens, incl. the front., the half-length portrait of Ferdinand by J. Neefs after van Thulden, 33 large views of arches and stages built and the paintings adorning them, a nice view of the Antwerp cathedral, a large bird's-eye view of the city of Antwerp and 6 engr. showing the victory arch of the 12 emperors (num. 17-19 and 20-22, 3 engr. on 2 pl.); 45 engr. in-text (coins and medals). Half-title and front. in Arents variant c; the colophon bears the exact date "1642".
