Lot description
Folio: 15 (of 16) pls + 1 pl. inserted (pl. 14 missing, small stains).
Contemp. green calf, gilt spine on 6 raised bands, gilt and blindstamped covers (rubbed, def. at tail, scratch on lower side, sm. repairs).
Incomplete copy of the first edition of de Bouge's wall map published as an atlas with 16 numbered and hand-coloured engraved maps. Nice cartouche on title page with dedication to the duke of Arenberg, whose duchy is included on a small inset map (pl. 15). While pl. 14 on Picardy is missing, our copy includes de Bouge's "Carte générale correspondante aux cartes particulières contenant les Tenances et Routes des Postes". First employed as cartographer by J.J. de Ferraris, de Bouge was sworn in as land surveyor in the Austrian province of Gueldres at the time the atlas was produced. Though inspired by Ferraris' "Carte marchande", he made use of a smaller scale. De Bouge worked together with the Brussels engravers Jeanne Cathérine Maillart and her brother Philippe-Joseph. Prov. Gustave Abrassart (ms. note). Not identified bookpl.
